| This is the best time of year as spring blooms start all over. My daffodils are blooming heavily now. My Nanking Cherries are just finishing up. The Forsythis is blooming everywhere. My Serviceberries are just starting to bloom. Flowering Cherries about town are in glorious full bloom and the Bradford Pears are just about to bloom. I love spring. |

| You're not the only ones! I spend way more time up in my roof garden than I do studying, and I have law school finals soon! Eek! I'll link to my garden blog. Please forgive its appearance! I just started gardening up there last year, so it's a work in progress and it's quite a challenging environment. The blog is really just how I document progress, so I can look back and remember what to do every year! I also posted about this to gee_oh a bit ago: http://gardening.meetup.com/148/ They're a group of perennial gardeners in Brooklyn who get together. Maybe we can join them, or start something similar! |

| Actually I have not been here since my last hard drive crashed on my computer last July. Things were in my favorites, like this forum but I got busy and forgot to put it back on the new computer and forgot to come back here too. I used to really love the Wildlife Forums here and the Shrubs Forums. But since I-Village took over many of the regular posters on those forums left and they are now very slow too. I mostly hang out at the rose forums and the dayliuly forums plus check the birding forums fairely often. I would love to see this forum start to pick up and get lively again. Haven't seen any hummingbirds yet this year. Just put out my feeder afew days ago. Last summer I had my usual females buzzing around or could be they were juveniles as this was midsummer. No males here in my yard. |

The little buggers are already past us.I have had feeders out since 4/01 http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html I'm sure glad this board is showing a little life When I first joined 6 or 7 yrs ago there were all kinds of questions from all kinds of people ,expert to novice .I liked it that way than going to a forum where nobody knows who you are. |

Good going lychee... I've been trying to get things going on this forum for months. I guess in true NY style ya just gotta yell it out. I'm in Manhattan. A few flowerbeds behind my building and I'm doing what I can. Columbines are just about to pop. Money plant has buds too. Perennials starting to get into a growth spurt and seedlings getting ready to make the move. Nice to see something going on. Peace George |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going

| Hey there, folks. I used to be active here a few years ago and held a gathering for brooklynites in my garden back then. Anyhow, my ornamental plum is in full flower; quince planted last year is nice and bushy with promising buds; dogwood just opening up; 2 blueberry bushes and viburnum leafing out; phlox & hydrangeas emerging. Just put in a pretty little berried cottoneaster; a few grace ward lithodora bought on a whim for the fabulous twilight blue flowers; and some rhubarb. My yard is always about 2 weeks behind the front gardens here in Park Slope. Oh yea, clematis came back in the stoop planter--yay--which also has rosemary, oregano & thyme now. Put pansies around the tree pit too. My gardening plan? Read, read, read then ignore it all and buy on impulse! LOL Mina |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
| funny post mina- where in brooklyn do you live- do u have any pics of your garden? i just planted 5 different hydrangeas (god forbid i should just buy 1- no i have to buy everything my big fat eyes see)even though the space which already has about 15 plants in it, is really only big enough for 1 hydrangea when fully grown |

Things are coming up nicely out back... Lunaria wintersown last year is blooming now. Bleeding heart has buds Penstemon is sending up stalks. Have to figure where to put my seedlings. Now if I could just hire a hit man for the slugs. Happy Spring George |

RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going

| yipla, I've been wanting a couple of funny hairdo chickens for years, but DH has been resisting for as long. Here in my "new" yard, the berries are leafing out and I'm waiting for the fig & persimmon (buds are now green). I think I'm going to need some weed block and punch holes to grow herbs in the center plot. It's currently covered with mazus, violets & dandelions AGAIN. |

| hey neighbors! i'm in holliswood/queens and just found this message board. yipla that remote-watering rooftop garden and bucket-grown melons are AWESOME! is there a forum for gardeners? this looks kinda well... just like a message board as opposed to something like a php or vbulletin forum =L |

| Thanks for the compliment! One good thing about the roof is that there aren't THAT many weirdo bugs, so not a lot of need for my very own slug hitman chicken. Don't think it'd do well on the roof at all... but I HAVE always wanted fresh eggs. exotic, I agree and have long wished GardenWeb's interface were a little more advanced. It is a forum though, and I don't know of anywhere else with such an expert membership. I like that there are so many forums, especially this one. It's great to feel like I'm not the only gardener in this city and that people are here to discuss location-specific topics. |

| i like the rooftop garden, yipla! i did one last year here in brooklyn, tomatoes and basil mostly. buckets and rubbermaids. some tomatoes did great, some never really took off. i had the craziest self-watering contraption as i have no faucet up there. this year i'm movin on up to a deluxe community garden plot on the ground... |

| Yeah, I don't have a faucet up there either, so I have a garden hose that drapes down from the roof to my apartment window. I fill a bucket of water inside and use a pump to send it up to a rubbermaid on the roof. Then the water drips out through a system of tubes to every bucket. It is unbelievably hard to keep shallow containers well watered up there, though. I'm about to give up. |

| This was last month. By the end of summer my elephant ears and brugmansia (thank you Gordon!) will be towering over everything. Behind the hammock is a temporary construction wall for the property behind us and a mini club house my son & friends built. |

Well getting most of my seedlings out of their wintersowing containers and into the ground or into pots. Last years sown perennials are doing great. Lunaria has bloomed, and fern-leaf bleeding hearts are just putting out their first set of flowers. Celandine is going great in the shade and has a couple of small yellow flowers. Its great to see volunteer reseeds from Torenia and Datura starting to poke up. This is my first year starting petunias indoors. They are pretty leafy now but no flowers yet. Columbines sown a couple of years ago have matured to flowering ... and one set of dwarf columbine sown last year has some buds. Happy Spring George |

| I'm new here, I live on LI on the south shore. My husband and I bought a house 3 summers ago, and I get to make all the gardening decisions, aside from the lawn (thats his domain). I know I'll be taking more from the forum than giving back for now, at least We spent the first 2 summers ripping out overgrown trees and shrubs (seriously who plants 9 pine trees along a 60ft property line, when there is a view of the water being hidden??). I put down a lot of the usual stuff...lavendar, montauk daisies, rhodendron, .... I'm from Ireland originally and prefer colorful flowers to landscaped shrubs, so the whole thing is a work in progress...though I did get heather do grow, and survive all winter....my daylillies were donated from my mother in law and are filling in the front flower beds nicely...when will they bloom? I just potted a knock out rose, a mandeville, a clematis and a hydrangea in pots on the patio (which is where I want to focus this year). How is the quality of Lowes and HD plants? I know the nursery is probably a better bet, but I can't afford to get everyhting there. I am also looking for some ideas on what else will grow in a pot / container on a south east facing patio. Has anyone used the Raindip automatic watering system? I am seriously considering one for the patio. I know I'll forget to water once too many times. thats all for now. I love my garden. |

| yipla: manhattan here as well. I have a rooftop garden, maybe 400 sf. Clematis, bamboo, lots of climbing/vertical vegetation in general (to make room for a mammoth pool my 7 yo has) |

| A pool? Awesome, I'm jealous! Your roof sounds a lot more ornamental than mine. I just have a bunch of buckets, with watermelon vines sprawling everywhere in the summer. I have some oriental lilies, but that's about it right now for non-foods. |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
| the garden's fanciness spiked when ikea had some large, cute planters on sale last year. I still have some tubs (tomatoes, pumpkin and grapes). Basil and catnip. Do you have a watering system set up? I find that my plants do a million times better when they are watered for brief periods a few times a day (although they are loving the rain right now) |

| I don't have an automatic watering system set up. I've been tinkering with a DIY drip system that I threw together last year. But, it requires that I fill a large bucket with water in my apartment, attach a gardenhose dangling from the roof to a pump at my window and pump the water onto the roof. Every day when it's hot. And my plants still struggled a little last year. A few times a day would be ideal, but I am not home enough. Maybe I could do it in the morning before work, and at night when I come back, but i get lazy. Do you have an automatic watering system? |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
| oh yeah. I ordered the parts from dripworks but I have a spigot outside. I usually have to order $5 - $10 worth of new stuff every year for the watering system. I JUST read some of your blog. A lot of action going on! I saw you go to LES ecology. We do vermicomposting at home with their setup. I can get away with more wacky stuff due to having a 7 year old that is into science. They go through 3+ pounds of food a week. |

| Man, I wish I had a spigot on the roof. Does your system turn on automatically using a timer? That'd be excellent. I haven't been to the actual LES ecology center, but I was at their table in Union Sq. I got a hand-me-down vermicomposting bin from someone who got it at LESEC, but it was in really awful shape. I ended up dumping all the worms and composty sludge into my buckets on the roof last spring. But, some of the worms made it through the winter! 3+ pounds of food a week sounds like a lot of food scraps! I have resorted to chopping up and blending my food scraps and putting them in a composting bucket I have on the roof. Blending seems to speed things up nicely. |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
| I actually SHOULD cut up the food for the worms (they would go through more that way) but I don't. The composting bins are $10 (with worms) if you take their class. My daughter is making more bedding for them as I type. We don't really have to do anything with it, just toss food in there and then occasionally turn it so all the food is on the bottom. The funny thing is, it sort of changes how I eat. I will be in the mood for cheese and crackers and eat a banana because I know they don't have enough food! For watering, I have a timer which goes off 4 times: once at 9 pm, 12 pm and then early in the am. Just a few minutes each time. I have never understood why house plants like to be soaked and then ignored and these seem to like regular water. I noticed on your blog you used those water-holding "crystals" or whatever they are called. You know you can "harvest" those from (clean!) diapers? I know there must be mention of that on gardenweb somewhere! |

| Hahaha! I don't think I'm at the stage in life where I think about diapers. =P I only use the water crystals for my ornamentals because I am not sure I want I like the idea of eating food grown on them, and my watering system doesn't work very well for short things like window boxes. I bought a giant bottle of them before I decided this though! Maybe I should try and sell some of them. The outdoor plants like a lot of water, especially in the summer, because it just gets so hot under the sun and wind. The water evaporates extremely quickly. Indoors, water does not evaporate from houseplant pots very quickly at all and watering them too often will make them waterlogged. |

| I actually did extensive amounts of research on the crystals before deciding to use them in my garden. The basic premise of the article is correct, that we all walk a line and decide in our own lives what we think is ok. My research confirms that there is a small risk that there are monomer-acrylamides in the mix. Now, this risk is very small and clearly some people have felt that it is appropriate to use these things in disposable diapers on babies for decades. Other people may feel that this is an inappropriate risk and use cloth diapers instead. The other worry about these things is their breakdown/biodegradability. There is pretty much no research that shows that the polyacrylamides break down into monomer-acrylamides. In general, they break down into organic compounds. All that being said, I have decided to use them in containers for non-edible plants. You may be dismayed to know that many commercial farmers use this stuff all over their fields. I would say what I do is a small risk and what these farmers do is a larger one, but again, we all have to make these decisions in our lives. |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going

| Most of my garden is still weeds and I'm leaving it alone so the cats will stay away since I currently don't have the $$ to invest in plants to fill the blanks. No persimmons this first year (and probably not for a few more), all the tiny starts fell off. The first set of figs fell off too, but now I've got 3 new ones growing. The birds got my first few blueberries, but I've already tasted my 3 raspberries. That's 3 individual little berries, though I do have 3 plants. And the little corner herb garden is doing nicely with the usual basil, parsley, thyme, oregano, rosemary, lavender and sage. |

| oh.. well hello everyone =) i guess im one of those "NYC posters in other garden forums" as george mentioned above. i guess i never spent much time navigating all the different forums that GW had to offer. well a little about myself. i live in brooklyn's bensonhurst area. we dont get much gardening space in our yards either but i guess im the lucky ones to have both an ample sized front yard garden as well as a back yard garden. flowers in the front and veges in the back. anyone start wintersowing yet? i put some out last week and will be putting more out next month probably |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going

| Hello! I am new to the forum and fairly new to gardening despite having grown up on farm in the midwest. I have had two summers with our backyard here in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Really enjoying playing but still in the early stages. I am currently going through the seed catalogs and making my plans for the coming season. My biggest question is how to start seedlings without any space in the house. I looked at the lighting systems but they are crazy far out of my price range. I am also considering a drip watering system for my containers since I have a tough time getting them enough water with two small children to look after. Looking forward to exploring the forum more! |

Hey Carolynanne and Benny, Welcome to the forum. Benny I have a few wintersown containers outside now too and I am waiting about another week to put out a few more... I space them out over the winter depending on the hardiness of the seed. Carolynanne- check out the wintersowing forum on here http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/wtrsow/ and also this great site that got me started www.wintersown.org This offers a great alternative to indoor space and lights Peace, George |

I want to grow a salad in my window sill. I have some planters and am looking for seeds and or seedlings, any advice? i prefer not to order online.... want heirloom tomatoes or/and cherry, arugula and basil to start thanks heaps |

| I heard that you can start arugula/lettuce quite early. Sounds fun. Never grew tomatoes indoor but I would suggest a "Patio" variety. |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
| I planted over 200 bulbs last fall and they're coming up! It's nice to see the patches of color throughout my weed-block covered yard. Also planted sugar snap and sweet peas in the ground this week in hopes of future dinners & fragrance. Squash & zinnia seeds will get started indoors. Is it ok to sow arugula outdoors yet? |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
My neighbors have a whole tub of it planted and growing already. Theirs is in a fairly sheltered spot, but leafy and getting ready for the salad bowl. Nice to hear about your bulbs, I finally figured out that mine need good fertilizer after blooming and as much sun as is possible, and now I've got a pretty good show of daffs and hyacinths (crocuses are done) with Lilies showing their crowns too. Volunteer seedlings already showing from celandine, dicentra eximia, montauk daisy, and thousands of shiso. |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
| Thanks gee oh nyc. I'll cut out a piece of weed-block and plant a handful of seeds. This year I'll add just zinnias from seed in my yard, but will splurge on a few hellebores for some early bloom next year. Hopefully this year will net more fruit than last year. |

| I've gotten a little bit of a late start this year. I just planted some sugar ann snap peas and am going to try for a leafy greens garden this year. Not going to be around at the end of the summer, so I figured tomatoes and watermelon won't be worth it. |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
| I finally saw signs of the snap peas yesterday, but nothing yet from the sweet peas. It's been over 2 weeks so I'm wondering if they'll ever grow. Inside, loofa squash and zinnia seedlings are just starting their first set of real leaves. The bulb display is really helping my backyard look like a real garden. |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
Glad the bulbs put on a good show for you. Mine did better than ever this year as well. Excited to see a lot of perennials I grew from seed starting to mature: heuchera (green spice, velvet night, and dale's strain,) dicentra, columbine, hardy geranium, and jacob's ladder all are filling out nicely. |
RE: c'mon New Yorkers- Lets get this forum going
| | |
| I'd like to start perennials from seeds next year, or maybe this summer. Just not sure it they'll survive the winter if I start late in the season. There's still a lot of weed-block back there, but at least I won't have to clear out solid spans of weeds again. It will be years before I fill the garden. It's so nice to see color again! |
