Smoke Damaged Birches

| Any suggestions for how to care for River Birches in planters that were too close to a chimney (w/a cap) over the winter. Some of their branches are blackened/poisoned from smoke and probably creosote and now have no leaf buds.
The trees are about 8 feet tall; second year in the planters. It would be quite unsigthly to prune out all the damage. Would it help to wash their small branches with soap? Any experience with this? Obviously the trees need to be moved, but what else do we do to help them come back?
Thank you. |

Your option might only be to prune out that dead wood. I would fertilize it and it should push new growth, if it hasnt already. marg |
