Sweetbay Magnolia Virginia

I am interested in knowing whether the Sweetbay Magnolia Virginia will be a shrub or tree in my zone 5 or 6 (Trumbull) Connecticut garden? I have read that in the north it is more shrublike and that only in the south will it reach the maturity size of a tree. If you grow this plant in zone 5 or 6, please let me know how big the plant is in your garden and the age of the plant. Thanks.

It also depends on the cultivar you get, some being more leaf hardy and therefore likely to grow larger, as well as the site it's in, the phases of the moon, etc.

Although extensive pruning of magnolias isn't supposed to be a good idea, you could make it more tree-like if you want by removing lower limbs over time to develop a single trunk.
