Good Nursery Near NYC???

I am tired of shopping for plants on 28th street. The prices are too high and the selection is too limited and mostly tropical indoor. I am looking for a good selection of everything and every size. I'm from California and miss the wonderful nurseries there. I want to find one like back home where it's a real nursery and advice. I also would like to find a HomeDepot with a REAL garden section. The ones I have been to have very small garden sections and the selection is mostly houseplants. Back home the HomeDepots had huge greenhouses and a selection you can die for. Where are you NYC???

since i don't drive i don't know of any within driving distance, but definitely check out the various farmers markets (union square, brooklyn, etc) in the city. local farmers with wonderful plants. you won't find much that is native or unique but for your basic plants and herbs it's a great place AND much much better to support local farms than mega-moths like home depot!!!! :)

Dmitri nurseries up on 103rd and Lexington (I think: check the yellow pages) has a very good selection of plants, and are cheaper than 28th street. The Lowe's and HD's in Queens and Brooklyn all have "garden centers," it's a total roll of the dice whether they have what you want and it's still alive after their "care." However, they do have great prices on soil, pots and supplies. I know the HD and Lowes's in the Sunset Park area are easily reachable by subway or taxi, though I don't know how many plants you could bring back that way! Jim

OH...at the risk of loseing a wanted plant...I vote for Matterhorn Nurserys... My favorite "local" they do alot of the stuff for macys... they are such a pleasure... piles of greenhouses and diffrent rooms... maybe a 45 min drive form midtownand you can go get your $4000.00 Koi there also.. and your garden railroad... and feed the ducks... [ OH MAtterhorn.. I'll take my compensation for this in annuals.. thanks ] Gordon

I second matterhorn. It's not the cheapest, but it outshines every other nursery around in selection and expertise of the people who work there. It is well worth the trip!

I'm a Lawngiland chick and hence, my suggestions are out here in Nassau County. Get onto the Long Island Expressway and exit off at Glen Cove Road heading south. (You have to make a right onto Glen Cove Road.) Go up 4 lights and make a left onto Jericho Turnpike. On your right is Hick's Nurseries (there is a smaller nursery on the same side of Jericho...it's right before Hick's). Hick's has been a Long Island mainstay for 100 years. They have a wonderful selection and their stock is superb. Since you're on Long Island...might as well make a day of it and head up to the North Shore and visit Martin Viette as well. Make a right out of Hick's and continue on Jericho Turnpike. Take the Route 106/107 NORTH exit. Bare to the left and take 107 North (do NOT speed on this road, the police will happily pull you over for sure!). Anyway...take 107 north to Northern Blvd and make a right. Go up a few miles and Martin Viette will be on the right. This is another magnificent nursery...superb stock, wonderful staff...and pricey plants. Have fun! Ciao, OITGAD

I saw these great grow bags on the tomato-growing forum: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tomato/msg0520430623025.html?24 (see bottom two pics) They don't have them at Chelsea garden center - but I'm dying to get some. Any ideas? They seem so perfect for those who don't want to drag home bulky containers on the subway. (They're backordered on the site that the poster recommends.) Will check some of the places mentioned above, but just thought it might be one of those quirky things someone can point me right to... |

David, Also a transplanted Californian here, and I agree that the NYC can't touch the CA nurseries. Of course land here is at a premium, and plants don't stack well on pallets... :-) The HDs near me (Flushing and College Point) normally have run-of-the-mill plants which tend to be poorly cared for and not that much of a bargain given the condition/selection. I can't speak for Lowes, as my one visit there for a screen door left a very bad taste in my mouth and I've not been back. Hicks on LI is very good, but pricey. There's Keil Bros. in Bayside/Auburndale Queens. They do the plantings at the US Open, which, if you've not been there during September, you're missing one helluva plant display. It'd remind you of Cali. There's a Garden World in my neighborhood, too, and I've been pretty pleased with them, but again, pricey. And you need to find the one dude there who knows anything about horticulture, since their staff is predominantly high schoolers with NO interest in plants. That one dude will also do soil testing, insect IDing, and really knows his stuff. But finding him can be a challenge. Good luck to you in your quest. What part of CA do you hail from? LA, SF, SD here... pieper

Queens Garden Center on the Cross Island Parkway just of Clintonville St - great selection and very good prices. also try Keil Bros on 48th Avenue in Bayside.

I second Keil Bros and Garden World in Bayside Queens. Although Garden world does have just ONE man who knows plants inside and out, their prices are a bit lower than Keil Bros. Then again....Keil Bros seems to have alot of knowledgable staff on hand.

I stand by Roslyn Nurseries on LI; they may not be the most user-friendly place -- just grab a cart, walk the rows and load up, no one's following you around -- but they have all sorts of unusual varieties of woodies and perennials, and if you can't make it there, try their web site! And for use guys in Brooklyn, Gowanus nursery is tiny, but has nice stuff, and the owners know their stuff, too. Ahhhh, spring! Jim

If you want a quick fix, the Union Square (Broadway/E.17th) green market on Saturday mornings can't be beat. There's good selection for an intown market, and the prices are usually much lower than the intown nurseries. Plus, you get to support an open air market, buy honey and organic goodies if you want.

Second the greemmarket at Union Square, though there isn't a lot of variety. But just about the best nursery I've ever seen anywhere is Nabel's in White Plains. Very easy to drive to (call them for exact instructions). HUGE, and beautifully organized, with very helpful staff.
