' Deer ate my crocus '

Hi fellow gardeners!!! Welcome to Spring 2005. If this is any indication of the coming gardening season I shudder to think. My crocus stared to bloom on sat. That's usually my first thing to bloom. I came out this morning the tops of the crocus and some of the tulip leaves were eaten. I assume it was the deer. We have a family in our backyard. After all these yrs we have deer!!!. I'm not near the woods. A suburban area. The deer first appeared last summer. They destroyed our garden. Now their in the front yard. I hate them!!! Anyway I'm pissed. I didn't even get a pic of the crocus. This bitter winter now this. Anyway enough crying anyone have any luck growing mint from seeds? I bought some all the sites say it's really hard from seeds. Do you scatter them on top of the soil like petunias with light overhead? Just started some seeds inside. got a late start. Tried to plant some old seeds didn't grow. Bought some new ones. Good luck everyone. I see my hollyhocks came back first the woodchucks now the deer. I guess I'll forge ahead:)

Sorry about your crocus. Deer certainly can be a menace. Up by my mother in western New York, the deer come right up to her front door and eat her bushes. She wrapped them (the bushes, not the deer)in burlap and put up a snow fence to keep them away. As for mint,I've never grown from seed. But they grow GREAT from cuttings, with or without roots. If you'd like I could mail you some. Email me at: jwood52@att.net. I cannot reply thru Gardenweb.

I would not scatter mint seeds unless you want a pasture of it for the deer. Mint will take over a neighborhood. Just get a cutting from someone and grow it in a container.

BUT, if it is for the deer, let me know! You may be on to something.

last fall i planted an assortment of "deer proof" bulbs -that i ordered on line - i live in manhattan - but i was hoping it would also be squirrel proof - as one or two or the little bastards climb the fire escape up 5 stories just to eat my garden.. turns out the crocuses were eaten by the pigons - and the "deer proof" bulbs haven't shown up yet... so no luck here - but lots of sympathy.
