We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

HI. I'm Maureen live in Lindenhurst and love flowers and gardening. I've been talking to a nice lady, Terri, that I met on the gardenweb forums.

We want to start an informal gardenclub. I need ideas, never did anything like this. But the point of this is to meet other gardeners from our area, share interests, maybe have tea and coffee and enjoy each others yards and company. Also if anyone has plants to share we could always do swaps if we want to. We could do a trip to Peconic River herb farm, which is a great place. Maybe we could do something like going to some of the famous gardens here on Long Island (forgot the names of them).
I've done some searches and it seems some gardenclubs are for their community. This would be just for personal satisfaction. Any ideas are welcome and please join with us.

RE: We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

Hi, this sound great but it is very hard to find a place to hold the meetings. I wanted to start one in Deer Park at the Library but they wanted me to detail all my ideas and present them to Head Director. There is a knitting club there but I really think more people are into gardening ( could be wrong ). Its also hard to find people to help out. Hubby belongs to VFW but because of insurance, heating,ac ... all this comes into play. My friend and I were then thinking at our houses but then there is Home Owners Insurance and how do you politely tell people not to bring small children ( my yard is only set up for adults as my kids are in their twenties, or too many people and cars. I still want to do something but these are all things to think about without sounding too negative. Please email me back ladies.

Hi, my name is Jannie and I'm in Kings Park (north shore, western suffolk),and I would love to join a garden club. Anyone serious? A library or other public place sounds great. My house is not up to having company, very small and cluttered, no parking. But I do have lots of time available. Again, any serious suggestions? I could envision mettings to get to know each other, exchanges, trips to Westbury,Hicks, etc.

RE: We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

HI everyone. I was thinking more like a
" meet at my yard kind of thing??? " My house is tiny also and there is no room in my tiny house to accomodate more than my family, but my yard can accomodate several people. And we would not be getting together that often, may every few weeks and then once in a while to a public garden or maybe a trip out to Peconic Herb Farm, or the Rose farm.

We could maybe set up a preliminary schedule, example:

5/31 meet from 12:00 - 2:00 at Maureen's yard to have coffee and tea and talk about plants.

6/14 - lets head to the Brooklyn botanical gardens

6/31 meet from 12:00 - 2:00 at Maureen's yard (or if anyone else wants to jump in ) coffee/tea - talk about plants, maybe do a plant swap if anyone has an extra plants.

7/7 - trip to Peconic river herb farm. Pack your lunch, they have a pretty spot by the river we can relax by and eat lunch. Browse the beautiful plants they have for sale.

Sometimes there are things going on, like the long Island daylily assoc. may have a sale thing at Farmingdale college, or something like that.

This would be a very informal flexible type of a get together, not a formal "garden club". What do you all think?

Let me know your thoughts,
Maureen

Maureen-great ideas, sounds wonderful, please post more. I am also more interested in "personal satisfaction" , fun with gardening, not looking for doing charitable work or something heavy. Just looking for friends interested in gardening and having fun. Coffee, too, and I love to bake. Maybe I'll bring cupcakes.

That sounds like fun! Although I have a 2.5 year old(will be 3 in June). Not sure if we would be as welcome at some of the homes, but I would love to go to the Peconic River Herb farm. My daughter loves gardening too and would really enjoy that. I promise, if she cries or acts out we'll leave. I'm not one of these parents that make others suffer through a tantrum. She's actually very well-behaved though. ;)

Hello, all your ideas sound fantastic Maureen. I come from Deer Park.Would love to hear any plans for the future. My friend around the corner would probably like to come also. People could bring pics of their gardens. It's fun to see other people's flower and vegetable garden. St Peter's By The Sea Church in Brightwaters had a lovely tour ( 6 to 8 gardens ) a few years ago but stopped due to the passing of its organizer. It was great and had a English Tea afterwards ... all for $18. I would consider a meeting but could only have adults as our yard has koi pond and too dangerous for children.

Hi all. This sounds wonderful and is something that I too always wanted to do. I think maybe a good way to facilitate this is.... all who are interested can post their personal email addresses. Then the first person who wants to arrange an event can do so by simply emailing the group. Whoever can make it or wants to attend, great. Then once the first event has occurred, another person can pick up the ball, arrange an event, and send an email out to the group. Perhaps someone in the group could also start a new thread on the MetroNY board from time to time, alerting any "newbies" of the group, and giving them the option to submit their email address. Otherwise, the chances of folks remembering to come here to check and see "if" an event has been scheduled might be tricky. This is why I think an email distribution list might make more sense?

What do y'all think?

I'll start: my email is "yippee1999@yahoo.com".

Tx!

Hello to everyone! My name is Candace, I am in Oceanside and your plans sound good to me!

I am still in the planning stages of my landscaping endeavor and could use any input/ assistance I can get.

I would say that people need to consider what it is you want to do? Get together for informal chats/coffee, trips to gardens or nurseries- maybe go to a lecture or two.

Local trips for starter could be- Westbury gardens, of course, Humes japanese stroll garden, Brooklyn Botainical or the butterfly garden out east (what is the name of it again?)

I can see that the folks that have responded are fairly spread out. It would be best to meet in a central location. It doesnt need to be at a local library, firehouse or home, what about just at a local park?

I can handle volume at my place, but I am somewhat off the beaten path. Kids are okay, but we dont have a child proof enviroment and would need to do some prep first.

Maureen- do you realized that you just volunteered? Drop me an email and I would be glad to help you organize.

RE: We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

Hi again everybody. Just some ideas/comments to throw out there... I don't think we need to worry to much about accommodating everybody with regards to type of activity (i.e., will everybody be interested in it?), location (i.e., will it be convenient for everybody?), public transportation options (for those without a car), whether your place is childproof (for home-based events), or how many a location (i.e., someone's house/yard) can accommodate. We're never going to be able to please/accommodate everybody... that's a given. So I think someone should just go ahead and arrange an event, and then so long as everybody has the specifics (type of event, location, maximum number of people that can be accommodated, kids ok?, child-proof home?, any pets at home that visitors should be aware of? ... then it can be up to all of us to decide whether we want to attend or not.

I think all the various potential outings that you've all proposed sound great!

And I'm also game to have folks out to my place! :--)

Hi everyone, I love your ideas - whether it's plant swapping, just have coffee or go to Old Westbury Garden! I am in Smithtown, by the way.
One fall-back idea, just in case there is no place to meet: why not a coffee house/restaurant - at least for the first meeting to see how many people are really interested.

RE: We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

It just occurred to me... what exactly does "Metro NY" mean? I assumed it meant NYC. It seems everyone here is from LI. Are there no NYCer's into gardening? :--) LI isn't considered part of NYC (is it?). Thanks.

 o
RE: We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

There used to be people from all over the metro area ,until they broke it into so many websites that they all died .nice to see some activity again.

 o
RE: We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

Yippee, I think Metro refers to the Metropolitan area which consists of lower NYS (yes, Long Island is a part of that), Connecticut, NJ and even parts of PA.

RE: We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

Where did everyone go?

Well Aspiring....

I was planning on going to the Hofstra show, but I think that it would be better to meet first for chit/chat. Get to know others that sort of thing.

Where are you located? I noticed that most respondants are from out east. I am in Oceanside, but can travel without problem.

I am motivating to go out to Roslyn Nursery soon, this week or next. (depends on work & DH schedule) I am hunting for trees and shrubs. Need to find a good cost/size ratio.

Anybody else up to a get together this month????

PS- Where did Maureen go?

RE: We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

HI everyone!! I'm back. Sorry for delay, got married on Saturday 3/18 back to New York Monday night and back to work Tuesday morning. Been hectic but good. This is really exciting with all these responses.

Yipee - great idea with posting our email addresses. Here's mine:

Maureenpm00@hotmail.com

Jannie - yes, I agree with you 100%. I'm looking for friends interested in gardening. And did I tell you I LOVE baked goodies!! I love to bake too, but it's better when someone else bakes:-)

Luvahydrangea - would love to have you and your daughter. And I love hydrangeas too!!

Luvmygarden2 - that garden tour sounds like it was lovely. Too bad they don't do it anymore. If they have the one in Northport this year, I may go. If my friend's rose garden is in the tour again this year, I will go.

Off to put my son to bed, be back to post more.....

RE: We want to start a gardenclub...need ideas and people

Candance = welcome. Glad to have you:-)
Very kind of you to offer you place for one of our get togethers. I think meeting at a coffee shop for the first time is a good idea also. Central location so that no one has to travel too far, right?

Lynne - you are so right. It would be too hard to get everyone to agree on the same thing, so I think to come up with a planned event is a great idea. I, or myself and others (thanks to those who offered to help me out) could email everyone on this thread and then see who wants to join us. Thanks for offering you place for a get together. I love gardeners:)

Bee - yes, I think the coffee house or restaurant is a great idea to start us off. I'm a big coffee lover.

Terri - this is going so good. Thanks for offering your place too. I can't wait to meet you. It will be soon.

Yippee - NY metro to me does NOT include Long Island, but I guess there's no where else for us to hang out???

 o
meeting

Tom crowley - hi. It is nice to see other local people. On most of the forums I visit on gardenweb, it's rare to find out li'ers.

Terri - thanks for your enthusiasm. Your meet up plans sound good. I won't be able to do much this weekend coming up though. I'm so backed up with my yard work and my niece's birthday saturday and dinner at my father-in-law's Sunday. Of course if you all get together you must fill me in:-)

I won't be going to the Hofstra show, but think it's a great idea to get together at a coffee house (Starbucks or something like that) to set up a couple of things for the next month or two. And then what we could do is make the schedule, email it to everyone and ask for responses on who can make what.

I am free on April 15, Saturday. I'll email everyone separately and see if they want to meet on Saturday April 15. In the meantime, if you see this post and can make coffee on Saturday (afternoon ish?) please post here.

Looking forward to meeting you all,
Maureen
