weed identification

Hey! I just moved into this apartment in Carroll Gardens, and the garden is extremely neglected. I have a question about a plant that is popping up all over the place right now back there. I think it is a weed, but i can't find any exact information. It has 1"-wide kind of thick shoots, all green, growing out of a coil, the roots are purple, huge and tuberous. It looks kind of like a grass, but really thick, thicker than any crabgrass i've seen, so I am bewildered. Any ideas as to what this is?
I can't wait to get started gardening!
Thanks!

Hard to tell what it is without a picture of some sort -- can you post one? Most grasses don't have big, tuberous roots, but I could be mistaken, there are all kinds of things growing in Brooklyn!

One definition of a weed is a plant in the wrong place -- is this taking up space you want to plant right now, or can you wait a little more for flowers and a more positive ID?

thanks for the response--i actually saw some similar things growing out of a sidewalk bed in the city--so maybe they are flowers? I'll post a pic as soon as it stops raining!

It might be Japanese Knotweed, scourge of lots of Brooklyn gardens. It's hard to get rid of (but not impossible to control with tenacious efforts). Here's a link to a good description. Apparently you can eat the small shoots, like rhubarb.

If it is knotweed, I can suggest how to control it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Japanese Knotweed
