newborn squirrels

This morning a friend told me, with a significant look in his eye, to take a look at my couch out on the deck. When I lifted the cover I saw the cushions had been opened and their stuffing pulled out all over the place. I gathered up some of the stuffing, but then my next handful revealed a nest of baby squirrels, their blind naked bodies all curled up next to eachother, and the largest of them poked a curious nose up at the intrusion of light and air.

We placed some of the stuffing back on top of them and replaced the couch cover. Now I know why there has been one squirrel on my deck who has been so vocal, obviously angry at me, when I go outside into her nest territory.

I have no great love of squirrels but it seemed wrong to destroy the nest and the new life in it. What would you do?

I would dial 311. The city's info line should be able to direct you to the best authorities to place them in a proper habitat.
Good luck with it.

The situation has resolved: the nest is empty today. I'm guessing mother squirrel noticed the disturbance caused my my lifting the cover and moving the stuffing around, so she moved them to another location.
