Cheap plants in NYC

Hello.

Any suggestions of shops, supermarkets, or other places to get cheap plants in Manhattan? I usually go to Union Square Market but am wondering where else I could try.

Thanks,

Charlie

if there is a lowes i would try there- they have some noce stuff- some of the home depots also have decent stuff-
what i would really recommend though is renting a van and going to a nj nursery

The Lowes in Red Hook is good for standard stuff. One thing that Lowes has that Home Depot doesn't is a "half price" or "dollar" stack. When a plant shows a little distress, rather than throwing it out, they mark it down. I've nursed a few of those dollar plants back into healthy ones.
One thing I'd like to start is a "NYC seedling exchange." I've already done this with one member of this forum and it worked out great. We could set a day and a place and exchange what we've got growing.
Any takers?

Hmmm,

I've got a few unusual seedlings -- Surinam Cherry and Caesalpinia -- that need potting up. Whatchy'all got?

Sounds like I should check out Lowes. I heard something about Ikea having decent priced plants too. Maybe worth a trip.

I live in NYC and wish I had some interesting plants or cuttings for you neighbours. I am just a newbie planter. I just have pothos, tahitian bridal veil, and a snake plant.

Charlie - what are you looking for? I have some irises that need thining, some coreopsis, and some coneflowers. Also some roses - I just posted a note about them.

Gee_oh, I just heard about this site meetup.com where you can organize a group around a common interest. There's a Brooklyn Perennials group here: http://gardening.meetup.com/148/

I just joined, so I don't know much about them, and haven't yet attended a meetup. But, maybe they would be receptive to a seedling exchange and things like that. Certainly wish I'd made it to their Brooklyn Botanical Gardens trip. Or you could start your own meetup?

Here is a link that might be useful: Brooklyn Perennials Meetup
