Sprouts from NYC wintersowing

Posted by gee_oh_nyc 7 New York City (gee_oh_nyc@yahoo.com) on

Hi Everyone,
After those freezes, I checked my containers and here's what has spouted so far:
Balfour's Impatiens
Hardy Geranium
Candytuft
Pink Chrysanthemum
Coreopsis
Japanese anemone
Some perennials I wintersowed last year and planted are showing new growth too... toad lilies poking their way up, montauk daisies starting to open their leaves, feverfew getting perky again, and both lunaria and hollyhock are getting new leaf growth.
Spring is on the way!

Good for you Alberta! Today was a good sprout day for me too. I found a nice strong Gallardia sprout and several VERY tiny Heuchera sprouts.
My atlasflower is another name for Clarkia. Have you grown these before? Any tips? They look very nice in the pictures. Let's hope my little back-garden will be a good home for them.
All the best

Hi, Gallardia will sprout and grow like crazy. They are so pretty. I've been winter sowing now for 7 years, so I don't rush out anymore to see what's sprouting, LOL. I haven't ever tried the heucheras, from seed but do have two plants of them that come back every year in one of my beds. Hardy geranium does well winter sowing, and also will come back in my beds yearly. This is my first year trying larkspur and also agastaches, I'm really hoping they do well. I'll check out the containers again tomorrow and post what else I've found germinating. Like I said, I'm thrilled to find sprouts but not as crazy as I used to be out there tapping on the containers all the time to find out what has sprouted, :) Winter sowing works so well, that I've gotten rather used to it and just expect to see sprouts.

Hi Alberta,
I am actually surprised at how WELL Heuchera wintersows. I had some palace purple seeds last year and I have a couple of very stong plants after just one season. The ones that sprouted I got in a trade and they are a mix. We'll see what happens with them as they grow.
Peace
George

I never got my winter sowing started. I guess it's too late. But this morning it's sunny. I went outside and walked all over my yard. In the front the crocuses are up, and in the back the hellebores and snowdrops. Yesterday I planted Lily of the Valley.

update;
Finally got out to write down what has germinated so far, here's my list
Poppy White Cloud
Bunching Onions
Aster Bouquet Powder Puff
Agastache,Blue Fortune
Agastache, Purple
Agastache, Golden Jubilee
Allysum, Purple, White and Basket of Gold
Lettuce,2 varieties
Snap Dragons
Salvia, White Knight
Larkspur,Giant White
Clarkia
Dianthus Deltoids
Bachelor Buttons
May Night Salvia
Aster Mix
Aster Vibrant Pink

Actually the last few days I've been trying to get my yard cleaned up, the wind on Saturday did me in, LOL. For some reason we did not get all the leaves cleaned up in the fall, so its really a mess out there.

Jannie, if you read this, you can still do some sowing, its time to spring sow annuals via the WS method.

Today I was happy to discover my Fritillaria meleagris is coming up in a container on my balcony. I didn't even mulch it and it survived. No sign of the lily of the valley yet. :(

I am feeling guilty about excessive water use again this year, so I am going to try and keep myself to a few annuals & herbs this year. I thinned the portulaca seedings growing on my dining table, and started the nasturtium and cypress vine seeds today.

Some more sprouts in my wintersowing containers:
Dicentra eximia
White corydalis
Morning Glory Milky Way
Toad Lily Moonlight
Toad Lily Samurai
Toad Lily Albomarginata
Toad Lily Raspberry Mousse
Bachelor buttons
Poppy
Baby's Breath

What's sprouting outside for you?

RE: Sprouts from NYC wintersowing

Outside not only my fritillaria meleagris survived, so did my Victoria Blue clematis! I am still hoping for the lily of the valley to come up; I haven't seen it in any yards yet either, so maybe it's just getting a slow start this year.

Hi Benedita,
My Lily of the Valley is just poking up some green now. Yours will be soon to follow I'm sure. Lots of perennials coming back... but have you sown any new plants outside this winter? Wintersowing is a great way to get a jump on the planting season by sowing seeds in containers and keeping them outdoors. Give it a try!

RE: Sprouts from NYC wintersowing

I just saw my lily of the valley peeking up today.
I haven't tried winter sowing, but I am starting a few kinds of seeds inside to get a jump start on spring.
What do you do? scatter the seeds when the container mix is still frozen, or do you scatter them in fall?

Some might go in the fall.. Most containers are prepared through out the winter and put outside.
Check out the link below ... and the wintersowing forum here on gardenweb.
