Free plants or very low priced

Hello gang :)

Forgive me if im being presumptious. But I was wondering if anyone had anything they'd care to give away or knew of a place I could get plants, very cheap.

We just bought this house and DH has changed his mind and not giving me any allowance for the landscape, but its a wreck or nonexistent and I do so want to garden this year.

thanks in advance.

Hello Aspiring...

Congrats on your new house! I am in a similar boat. We have a new house, and I am starting my garden this year as cheaply as possible. The sellers did have some stuff here, but they took out a deck that left a large dirt area that'll be my new garden. My suggestions are:

- start from seed! You can start perennials that will come back each year. And annuals that will self-sow for next year.

- meet your neighbors that have nice gardens and talk to them! Some neighbors let me collect seed from their garden last year and one wonderful neighbor actually dug up plants for my to take back to my house. I just stopped by to tell her how much I enjoyed driving by her garden every day, and she told me to come back with a bucket in a few days to take some plants home!

- keep your eyes peeled for catalogues that come in the mail (you may get them since you are a new homeowner). I have received 2 that had coupons for $25 off plants. I just ordered $25 worth of plants from each and left it at that.

Good luck and have fun making it work!

Mel

Stay tuned. I hope I can have a plant swap this Spring. Also, I belong to the Patchogue Garden Club. Every year the members have a plant sale and huge plants go for REAL CHEAP. You do need to get there early. I will keep you posted when the date is. Also , check Newsday and your local paper for plant sales closer to the season. Susan

Go to the plant exchanges here on garden web. Many generous people offer plants for the cost of postage. Lynne
