Where do you buy your vegetable plants?

I have been vegetable gardening for only 2 years. First year I bought all of my plants at a farm stand in Merrick (on Merrick Ave- Furgie's?) and all was amazing. Great prices, wonderfull plants. Last year they could not get their act together. Plants were late comming in because of unseasonably cool weather (plants are from a farm in upstate NY), poor selection for the same reason. I bought 3 types of tomatoes- beefsteak, roma & cherry- the roma were all miss marked and were beefsteak. Very frustrated with them. I am near Dee's in Oceanside, but I cannot bring myself to pay $4 per plant. I dont need large plants. I ended up at Atlantic in Freeport for much of what I needed.

I realized that I used to shop a Franks alot. Boy oh boy I do miss them.

Any recommendations on where you all get your vegie plants from?

I have to try winter sowing next year. Its still not too late, so I will try some lettuce and see what happens.

anybody?- Candace

the only plants I buy are the long season ones .Tomatoes, eggplant and peppers .most other veggies can be grown from seed. I would still wait a few weeks but that will be determined by your local coditions.

I dont.

Candace - I don't buy plants. I grow from seed. I will be starting my tomatoes indoors any day.

If you want I'll do extra tomatoes and you can pick up seedlings at one of our get togethers.

I do heirloom tomatoes - but no plum (don't like) and no cherry.

I also have seeds for peppers, cukes, eggplant melons, etc. if you would like to grow your own this year I'll be happy to give you 1/2 of my seeds. (I won't use them all anyway)

Since many responses were that people grow from seed, I opted to try a winter sowing method I learned on BHG website. I just planted tomatoes, lettuce & peas last week. I am hoping for the best.

Last year I had (2) accidental tomato plants sprout. But they never did very well. I hope that these seeds will fair much better.

Maureen- I would gladly accept seeds at our get-together if you have extra. I was planning on trying out melons this year. Heirloom tomatoes you say? How do they taste? Can you can them? Looking forward to meeting you all later this month. I will be there!

HI Candace. Heirloom tomatoes are my favorite to grow. I've only grown tomatoes for 1 year. Canning depends on which type is grown. I only like the slicing/salad/sandwich types. I don't can anything. But I am trading right now with another forum person and I think they are sending me about 20 varieties of tomato seeds. I don't need them all, just want 1 or 2 of them. If I get them I'll give them to you. The meeting time and place will be ready shortly. I'll be in touch.

Maureen
