Hi. I live in Medford. I want to start a vegetable garden. Will you be selling veegie plants at the sale? Any advice on what does well in this area?

Becklescc...I'm just down the road in Patchogue, but grew up in Medford. We're fortunate here to be able to grow most anything, but with one caveat I'll offer...the soil up your way (at least, where I was off Woodside Ave.) tends to be very sandy, thin, and acidic (we're right at the edge of the Pine Barrens, and there's a reason nothing grows in the Pine Barrens but pine!). If you've got native pine trees close by, you're in that area. For the best success, I'd recommend spending some time improving that soil first... go over to the Holtsville ecology center ASAP (or better yet, the town dump, if you have a pickup truck) and load up as much compost as you can carry (yes, its full of weed seeds, but its free). Get a 6 inch layer laid down and work it in with a good bit of lime to bring the PH up. Otherwise, with that sandy acidic soil, you're likely to get a really limited yield from whatever you plant (Dad and I both plant the same varieties from the same source...his tomatoes never get more than about 2 feet tall, while mine literally top out at over 6 feet!). Good luck and happy gardening.
