Hi! I just joined the forum. I live in the next town over(Lindenhurst) and am constantly in the process of dividing my perenials. Right now I have hyperion Daylilies (lemon yellow/ fragrant), Stella d'ora daylilies, a Plantain hosta (white fragrant), Siberian iris (which unfortunately just finished blooming), also another large hosta with fragrant white blooms( don't know the name)Your welcome to them if your interested. | Hey Tracy- Nice selection of divisions, but I thought that you were suposed to divide either in the spring or fall. I have been known to divide Iris any time of year after blooming because they are really tolerant. But some of my daylillies just totally wilt if I mess with them at all. Expecially the fan shaped ones. (these are all acquired from Mom, so I dont know the names of them.) If someone can tell me how to start the suckers from butterfly bush, I have a yellow one that is trying to take over the garden. I am beginning to wonder if it is invasive or just really happy. Do you just put a branch cutting in water? or does it need to be from below grade with roots? I would definately be interested in a swap. I just cut a new bed 20'X20' that needs to be filled. I would also be interested in any type of daisy shaped flowers, bottle brush types and definately daylillies. But I have lavender colored iris & yellow thread leaf coreopsis (tick seed) that I can split if someone is interested. If anyone wants a pastel Yarrow, you can have the whole thing. Sounds like we need to set up a swap meet. Sound out if you are interested. --Candace |

Candace, Your right ! You are suppose to divide in spring or fall. I'm actually getting rid of these to redo a small garden of mine.I've used all I need, so either, I give them to someone or they are going in the garbage.(I have lots) I divide when I have the time, whenever that is. I try to do it on cloudy days and water, water, water, till they make it though. Tracy |

| I have tons of heirloom tomato plants that I hate to have to compost but they are going to have to go soon enough if I can't find a home for them. Planted a few seeds crossing my fingers that one of two would sprout and everything sprouted! I have accordion and black prince varieties. Not sure whats what though so you'd have to try your luck. I also have unknown varieties that came up on their own, probably from the compost. Anyone who wants them and is in the area this week in the evening, you are welcome! Would love to trade for some pots/containers, but not a must. |

I have the same problem- I tried winter sowing this year, not really sure if it would work. I have tomato plants comming out of my ears and no place to plant them. Currently they are all potted since I cannot bring myself to compost them. I will probably just end up tilling another bed. I will plan better for next year. --Candace |

| tracy- do you have your extras potted up? I can rendezvous with you this weekend if you are going to be around. Email me at clacker3@hotmail.com or respond here, whichever is easier. Also, we are working on getting a gardening group together. Would you be interested? --Candace |

Candace- Sorry,I'm not available weekends.Terri came by and picked up what I had potted Monday. She is going to make a special trip back to pick up the large hosta, as she is going to take the whole plant. I told her to bring the pots back and I will fill them up again. As for the garden group, sounds great but I just can't commit. No time, especially this time of year. Tracy * Candace- Do you cut your butterfly bush back? I cut mine back every March to between 12" and 18". And during the summer, if I have the time, I actually deadhead the bush which takes at least a foot off the new growth. |

Dang! Snooze you loose! That Terri- she is fast! If you have more to donate, let me know and I can swing by on the way home from work. I was mostly interested in the lillies. So far the garden group has only planned things for during the weekends when most people are avail. However, I recall that there was a few who had more availablity during the week. I work M-F 8-5 so weekends and nights are for me! This is the 3rd summer for my butterfly bush- I was advised not to be soft in trimming it back. So I cut it all the way back to about 18" high, leaving only the larger branches. It is already about 4.5'-5' tall. I was later told that the yellow variety that I have is a very fast grower and can become a nusiance. I heard that you can dead-head them, I did not invest the time for it last year. I might give it a go this year. It is a very prolific bloomer and doesn't seem to need much encouragement. I did however, cut back its width recently since it was encroaching on my lillies. This thing is really tring to be a monster. My purple butterfly bush is nothing like this- but it gets alot less sun. -Candace |
