growing plants from seed to sell in NYC

Posted by theaubrinator Queens/ z6-7 (My Page) on

I am currently growing lots of plants in my apartment in Queens, NY. I recently moved here from upstate NY and greatly miss growing plants outdoors! I am wanting to sell plants, probably just on a table outside my apartment in May or June, but i'm not sure which type of plants would sell best. Does anyone have any ideas what type of plants people want the most in the city? Thanks!

Sorry I cannot help. As you can see the site is not busy at all, used to be fairly active and I met some really nice fellow gardeners on here and we did get together a few times.
Are any of you gals out there any more?

Hey Marci...Who you callin' "gals?" (in my thickest NY accent) Yeah, it is a fairly slow forum, but let's change that!
Aubrinator... I would put yourself in your fellow gardener's shoes. Probably people want partial shade annuals that will grow nice in a container...
some things you see at local "farmer's markets" are:
coleus
torenia
impatiens
nasturtiums
herbs
Good luck.

If you're ever at one of the big farmer's markets, you could try to chat up some of the salesfolks and see what they sell the most of!

Well, i've decided to maybe just do a few things this year and see how it goes. i hadn't really considered all the regulations and laws regarding selling things to people in nyc... (I'm country gal and am still figuring the city out, haha) So for now i'm actually going a different direction entirely.. I'm going to grow some houseplants... Quite a switch i know, but I think i might have bit off more than i could chew with the initial thought. And if nothing sells of these, i'll have a very green apartment:D

Selling plants is very complicated.
You not only have to register as a business in NYC, and register for collection of NYS & City sales tax, you have to apply for a nursery license from the Plant Industry Division of NY Ag & Markets. They will come out for yearly inspections.
You should also have done most of these things when you were growing plants for sale while living upstate. Guess you can get away with more when you are living in a less populated area.
