Are there any good garden centers within a 20 mile radius of manhattan or NYC. I have tried unsuccesfully to find turface and pine bark fines at home depot and lowes.

Wish I could help you lychee. Sometimes the Home Depot around here will not get garden stuff in until later. Did you ask if you could order it? Just a thought. Good luck with it all.

If HD or Lowe's doesn't have it now, I'd be surprised if they didn't stock it soon; I try not to go to box stores as a first choice, but this stuff is the kind of thing they're best for -- cheap and convenient.

If not, your best bets are, depending where in NYC you are, Chelsea on the West Side in the 20s, its branch store in Red Hook or Liberty Sunset nearby when they open later this month, or one of the surviving nurseries around White Plains. Alternatively, a suburban box store will likely stock more lawn and garden products, so that's another option.

My favorite nursery is Atlantic Nursery in Freeport. It's about 30 MInutes from NYC by LIRR, but worth the trip. Especially if you have a car to transport plants with.

Try Weisner Bros., 2402 Victory Blvd., Staten Island
phone: 718 761-5141. Excellent nursery.

I like Nabel's in Mamaroneck (probably just outside 20mi but a quick drive on the Hutch). They have pine bark fines but I'm not sure about turface (plenty of perlite). It's my favorite nursery in lower Westchester.

Here is a link that might be useful: Nabel's
