An 'updated' thought for spring

Posted by gee_oh_nyc 7 New York City (gee_oh_nyc@yahoo.com) on

In an earlier post Audrey and I talked about having a "garden exchange"... maybe at the end of April or beginning of May. It could happen at one of the metro-area parks that are easily accessible to different subway lines. I was thinking maybe Union Square or something like that. Let's list anyting here that we might probably have available for an exchange, then we can say what plants on the lists we may be interested in.
I'll start it off-- Here is what I have to trade:

Coral bells (palace purple, midnight, dale's strain)
Toad Lily
Coleus
Phlox
Bergamot
Day Lily
Great Blue Lobelia
Hosta
Hydrangea
Helenium
Fern Leaf Bleeding Heart
Vinca (Both variegated and solid green)
Creeping Thyme
Lemon Balm
A few different kind of Datura...
...will update as more perennials pop back up or as more seedlings get established

If you see anything you like on this list, post an offer or post a list of your own.

Happy Spring!

George

Hello George!

If all goes well with my Winter Sowing I will have extra:
Lobelia cardinals
Aristolochia tomentosa
Tradescantia ohiensis
Mimosa nuttallii
Gaillardia aristata

AND:

Tomatoes

Black Eyed Susan-several kinds
Tidy Tips
Purple Cone Flowers
White and Green Cone Flowers
Poppies
Ox Eye Daisy
Zinnas
Sunflowers

Even if just the two of us trade it could be fun!
I wanted phlox and didn't get around to getting those seeds, and some other things you hope to have!

Actually these are all plants that are estblished that I need to divide this year. I haven't even listed my sprouts yet!
Noticed your post on the wintersowing forum.. good going. I would need to stay within the city limits for this trade... probably only have a couple hours on a week end morning.
Happy Spring,
George

I have more Lychnis Coronaria than I know what to do with, and would be happy to share. It is strikingly pretty and quite tough. I've also got a few clumps of Siberian Irises (not sure about the variety; passed along from my mother, and who knows where she got them) that need dividing. Plenty of vinca too, free for the asking. I am considering abandoning my Philadelphus experiment (not enough room) too, so if anyway is interested in it...

RE: An 'updated' thought for spring I'll go anywhere

Hello all
I think we can manage an in city swap! I would love a Philadelphus! And many other things mentioned.
George was thinking of Union Square. I would do that. I'd rather a Brooklyn park, Prospect Park, or Sunset Park. But I'll go anywhere. The closer it is the more I can bring. I think I'll be able to charm a ride and a helper in which case some where with Parking would be great.
George are you near Union Square? As you don't have much time, maybe that is the best.
How about you others?
Audrey

RE: An 'updated' thought for spring

Hi Audrey,
I am fairly close to Union Square, but if the others in the trade are closer to Brooklyn I can certainly make it to one of the Brooklyn parks near a subway stop fairly easily.
Is Saturday May 2 a good day for people? Seems a long way off but it's perfect transplanting time.
Any thoughts?
Peace
George

May 2 sounds!
I guess we should see where others want to meet.

Peace Too!

RE: An 'updated' thought for spring

MMMMMM a swap time on May 2 is a great idea.. surely there will be a bit of spring about by then.. I'd love to go..nowhere near any of the parks on the Saturday in May will have good parking.. IMHO too many ball games going on.. I could volunteer Carroll Park in Brooklyn.. right at the " F " [4 th stop into Brooklyn ] line no walking near resturants .. food.. beverages.. parking usually available..
If we don'tget enough plants.. we can make a side trip to the nurseries in Red Hook.. like the great Liberty Sunset Nursery.. they will be in full warp mode by then..now it's just tropicals and house items inside mostly..
for plants.. we'll see what's returned.. and has rooted by then.. but surely some
Brugmansia.. the angels trumpets.. needs full sun and plenty of food..over winters inside
Plumeria.. the Hawaiian lei flower.. needs over wintering inside..
cactus

Caroll Park sounds fine to me. Any other considerations?
As far as the plants go...
I propose that as things get closer to May 2, we keep either an updated list here, or list what we have to trade on our own trade pages. It would be helpful to know what people are interested in so that we only have to bring those plants that we are sure others want. (Of course we can bring a few bonus plants if so inclined)
Sun is out.. Daffs are in bloom...Perennials are popping...and sprouts!
Happy Spring everyone.

RE: An 'updated' thought for spring

I'm a bit new at this, so I have only a short list to trade, but I'd love to join in if it's possible.

I have the following to trade:
Shasta daisies (1 or 2 clumps)
Sedum, I think Autumn Joy (1 or 2 clumps)
Day lilies (orange) - these will grow anywhere and love to multiply!
Lemon balm (several clumps - I just ripped up a whole bunch and put it in containers - I didn't know about growing mints in beds my first year! Ha.)
Don't get me wrong, lemon balm IS really lovely, and will grow anywhere. I'm just planning on keeping it in containers from now on since it loves to spread. :)

rue_lepsius, I would LOVE a Lychnis Coronaria.
And gee_oh_nyc , I have a shady spot that is desperately calling for a Fern Leaf Bleeding Heart.

May I join you all on May 2?

RE: An 'updated' thought for spring

Hi organic,
Sure, join us! The more the merrier!
I'd happily trade some Fern Leaf Bleeding Heart for your Autumn Joy Sedum.
Looking forward to seeing you in May,
Peace,
George

RE: An 'updated' thought for spring

Hello,
As more plants keep popping up I thought it might be easist to list what I have on my trade page.
Things for the swap will be in "Plants I have to Trade."
Let me know if there is anything you're interested in and what you would like to trade in return.

RE: An 'updated' thought for spring

Hello Everyone,
Gordon suggested Caroll Park in Brooklyn. I am suggesting 11 am.
Let me know if you want anything on my Trade List. (I made a special list for this trade under "Plants I Have to Trade")
Please confirm if you will be there. Looks like it might rain... should we organize a rain date?
Thoughts?

I'll be a little late, but I'll be there with seedlings 'n cuttings! Let's keep our fingers crossed on the weather, though I don't mind a little rain . . . .

Jim

RE: An 'updated' thought for spring

OK, everyone. With the rain factor, we thought we would keep it simple and meet at the steps of the entrance to the park at Smith and President Streets (This is the closest entrance to the subway stop: F train/ G train)
We're shooting for 11 am, though Jim said he might be a little late.
Thanks Gordon for making specific requests from my list... it will make it easier for me to know what to bring.
I'm bringing some bonus plants/seedlings in case we get any other folks joining us.
Still time to join... specific requests to each person helps in preparing the plants to bring.
See you at Carroll Park!
George
