Frank's is gone--where should I go ?

Frank's was one of my favorite (chain) nurseries. It closed in December due to bankruptcy.
Please recommend some of your favorite nurseries in Westchester County or southern CT--and tell me why you like them.
Thanks! |

| I'm in Long Island and I miss Franks too. Las time I was there, they were selling fake Christmas trees at big discounts. Then I drove by about a month ago and the property was completely closed, even the parking lot was roped off. What will I do when spring arrives? I used to love walking around in May. They had so much of everything-flowers, roses, herbs, supplies, and the prices were good. Does this mean I'll have to drive to eastern LI to get my "fix"? |

| I miss them too. There are many nice nurseries around but Frank's was always reasonably priced - and if you waited alittle they always reduced their prices after awhile. I don't know how many plants I bought from their TLC corner for 97 cents. Then I'd bring them home and most of them just needed alittle water and transplanting. I would never have as many plants as I do if I had to pay full price! |

| I very much like Tony's Nursery on Boston Post Road, Larchmont, Westchester County. Their prices are somewhat higher than the bankrupt Frank's but they have excellent quality plants and a lot of varieties. The staff is generally helpful and friendly. Actually there's also another nursery just beside them. Can't remember the name... But Tony's is the one on the left and is much better! The other nursery has more curb appeal, but the staff is not really helpful. |

| i think the one that is next to Tony's is Larchmont Nursery ? they have some nice things, but you have to mortgage the home to afford them ,,they had some 1 gallon bamboo ( farnesia ) for $175.00 ,,, bet its still there,,, and dead now I live in Stamford and there are some nice Nurseries in this area ... alittle pricey but good selections: Lee's ( interlaken road off high ridge ( 137 ) exit 35 off the Merritt .. another on North Street near the Merrit .. south at exit 31 I think of the merrit... Greenwich .. bring your check book Mcardle and mcmillian exit three off I-95 ,, bring the family jewels ,,, good selection |

Rosedale Nursery in Hawthorne Sprainbrook Nursery in Scarsdale McCardles in Greenwich Those are my favorite local garden centers though I often travel to central CT and Long Island for plants. |

Oh, I didn't say why I like them... Rosedale good selection annuals, perennials, shrubs, okay prices Sprainbrook good prices, fair selection not much unusual stuff McCardles expensive but interesting Olivers in Fairfeld, CT is also good expensive, unusual, large plants Matterhorn across the Tappan Zee bridge in Spring Valley is a fun trip, expensive too I live near Nables and Gedney Farm in White Plains but I find both overpriced. I order alot online and take plant hunting trips to central CT and LI. |

| I think Rosedale has a nice selection, too, but find the people who work there a little heavy on the attitude. If anyone is in northern westchester, there is a guy named Jim who has a small nursery on 133 just outside of Mt. Kisco. He grows his own stuff, and seems to specialize in really cool stuff like keringashoma (sp), tiarella and gorgeous astible, to name a few. He's very knowledgable and if he likes you, might toss in something unusual for you "just to try." |

| I used to get a lot of my basic plants at Frank's too. And this on top of Nilsson's closing last year! Tough times for Southern Westchester gardeners! I've always bought a lot at Green Valley (just down 9A from Rosedale). I think they're better than Rosedale on annuals - more selection and more 6-pack and flats. They have a whole string of greenhouses mainly devoted to annuals. Very nice people. I sometimes buy some basics (like wave petunias)at Sam's Club. You never know what they'll have and it's usually only a couple of different plants, but the prices are good. The Pleasantville garden club sells flats (and usually great hanging plants) the saturday before mother's day. I'm sure other garden clubs do too. If you get there early, you can also get some perennials from the members' gardens. Some of those are unbelievable bargains (last year I just missed the biggest, lushest epimedium I've ever seen..........) |

| Valley View Wholesale Nursery in Vista. Not the cheapest, but you definitely get the best plants for the money. |
