Sources for soil/compost in bulk?

| Anyone have a good source for buying soil and/or compost in bulk? I need about 20 cubic yards.
Opinions on the merits of buying bags vs. truckloads?
Thanks!
Best,

hmmm... i don't know of a local source (i do my gardening stuff upstate -- hudson valley). but i would think that buying in bulk would be cheaper, as typically things are less expensive in bulk. bags are tidier, i s'pose. you can stack them up, and grab a bag as needed. but i imagine it'd be more expensive. i'm not sure of where you would buy it, though. maybe you could contact the brooklyn botanic garden, to see if they have any suggestions? good luck! --robbie--

Try Bedrock landscaping products on Sunrise Hwy, around W. Babylon. If they don't carry they should be able to tell you who does. And it is Much cheaper buying in bulk.

The city gives it away in the spring and fall at the garbage facilities like Arthur Kill. There's one in each boro. As much as you want. You show up with bags/ bins and a shovel. They send out mailings to homeowners. Remember though, that compost is heavy, so make sure you have a sturdy bin and car or bags. We got it last year, and it is very good quality. Sometimes, they will give you a fixed number of bags if they are close to closing time.

I don't think bags and shovels are going to cut it if he needs 20 cu. yards, LOL! Last year I got one cubic yard, of mulch and it was basically a dumptruck full of it. I know the Town of Brookhaven where I live gives it away for free, or maybe that's mulch. There's a composting company down the road from me on Horseblock Rd. in Yaphank, I'll provide you with a link. If they don't deliver it, I bet they can provide you with a name of a distributor that does. As to your question about bagged vs. truck delivery. I'm not sure about compost. I just started making my own so have never purchased any. However, I can tell you this about having mulch delivered via truck. Its very convenient. However, there is one advantage of bagged mulch is that it appears to be much cleaner. I don't know if the process of having it in a plastic bag, kills off critter eggs through the heat that can be generated or what, but I found that my back yard, was INFESTED with wood roaches last year. I will never buy mulch in bulk like that again. Have you ever seen a wood roach? They can put a NYC roach to shame.
