Hi gang! Im looking for some large trees to plant in my yard to create shade and privacy. I was thinking birches or something not too slow growing. or maybe I have to buy real big.

Anyone know of anywhere...?

thanks.

Aspiring...try to go back and check out the threads about "Favorite Long Island Nurseries." If I'm not mistaken, that thread may have been on this forum, and also on the Norheast Coastal Gardening forum. It depends on how far you want to travel...I'd definitely recommend a trip out to Peconic River Herb Farm, though. Good luck!

Definately go to Ver De Ber, also, Cheap Sams off the LIE by exit62 I think...N side of LIE.Peconic doesn't really deal much in trees.Birches get a borer so do a little research as to the disease resistant varieties. There are several nurseries around Rt 135 near the LIE. I do not know any names, and they may be wholesale only....in case you know a landscaper....and if you do, you can get trees at Bissets.

The species Betula platyphylla japonica 'Whitespire' is the preferred birch for its pure white color and resistance to birch borer and leaf miner. It can grow to 35-40 feet. Some other nice selections could be 'Bloodgood' Japanese Maple and the hardy Crepe Myrtle. The maple grows 10-20 feet and the Crepe Mrytle 15-20 feet (some species 30 feet). Hope this helps! :) Lee
