Hi, just wanted to let you know that despite big doubters on some of these forums, I proved this summer that watermelons CAN be grown in 5 gallon buckets in NYC. Mine were on my roof in manhattan. I grew 2 sugar baby plants in their own bucket. Each produced 1 melon of edible size, about 6-7" in diameter. Not huge by any means, but they sure were tasty. And that was with not great watering on my part, and allowing some of the baby watermelons to get scorched on my tar roof. Don't give up hope! I'm doing it again this summer and plan to take better care of them, hopefully resulting in larger melons and/or more melons.
Best of luck!

RE: Lycheeluva! Watermelons in buckets can be done...
Here's a pic of them growing from their buckets. I have pics of them opened up and eaten, but not readily accessible at the moment. I can post them in a few days if you want.
very cool yipla- looking fwd to trying that myself next summer- how many hours of sun did the melons get- i have a giant wall at the end of my yard so I only get about 4-6 hours of sun a day-

The variety is Sugar Baby. I just got it in a pack from a local store, so I dunno if it was bush or what. Fortunately, I have access to a roof, so they get quite a lot of sun. 4-6 hours may not be enough to get good fruit, but you should definitely try. Best of luck!
