Where to Buy Perlite?

Posted by hkrooftop (My Page) on

Does anyone have a cheap source for horticultural perlite? I need about 12 cubic feet for my rooftop vegetable garden, and the best price I can find here in NYC is about $110. I can find mail order perlite for much cheaper (about $36), but the shipping gets the price back up to $110 or more. Any leads would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the leads. The hydroponic stores you suggested are all on the expensive side. Griffins seems promising, and I'm waiting on a price quote from them. We'll see how the delivery cost shakes out.

Garden is located in Hell's Kitchen (hence the hk in my handle).

Yes, Gordon is the pro at roof gardens! I saw his last year when we did the Spring plant exchange near Caroll Gardens and it is amazing.
Inexpensive Perlite? I am a notorious Loews snooper. The one in Brooklyn sometimes has damaged bags at half price.
I am always snarfing up half price soil and amendments.

Try Chelsea Garden Center, or Saifee Hardware. A nursery like Gowanus might be willing to buy in bulk for you.
