I want to create a small indoor herb garden but I dont know the best place to go in Manhattan to get the supplies without paying a ton. Any ideas?

Also any tips on creating/maintaining this garden would be helpful. I'll just be growing on my window sill in my kitchen.

Check out the Brooklyn Botanical Garden's guide to growing herbs, or the Ortho or Sunset series; they'll all have a little info on growing herbs indoors. Same with most houseplant books.

Supplies, for something this size, means a bag of pro-mix and some plastic pots from Home Depot or your local hardware store -- not expensive, unless you want nice-looking clay pots.

Here's the thing:

your choices of plants are very limited right now to what's available at the Union Square greenmarket or local florist shops.

Unless you've got a very sunny south-facing window or grow lights, you won't do well with most sun-loving herbs: try mints, scented geraniums, an aloe vera for kitchen burns, and maybe a foliage plant or two (ivy, etc.) for fun.

Don't expect a lot of growth and flavor during the dead of winter, but come spring, there's lots more choices available and you'll have more growing experience. Enjoy!

I'd wait until early spring. The local high-end grocery store in my neighborhood (Wash Heights) has a great selection of herbs come April. If we can get herbs up here in the boondocks, I'd guess most nicer grocery stores will carry them city-wide. What about Fairway? Maybe give them a call.

As for location, I have my herbs in an unshaded east-facing window and all of my herbs have done well: basil, sage, oregano, etc.
