| Check out the Brooklyn Botanical Garden's guide to growing herbs, or the Ortho or Sunset series; they'll all have a little info on growing herbs indoors. Same with most houseplant books. Supplies, for something this size, means a bag of pro-mix and some plastic pots from Home Depot or your local hardware store -- not expensive, unless you want nice-looking clay pots. Here's the thing: your choices of plants are very limited right now to what's available at the Union Square greenmarket or local florist shops. Unless you've got a very sunny south-facing window or grow lights, you won't do well with most sun-loving herbs: try mints, scented geraniums, an aloe vera for kitchen burns, and maybe a foliage plant or two (ivy, etc.) for fun. Don't expect a lot of growth and flavor during the dead of winter, but come spring, there's lots more choices available and you'll have more growing experience. Enjoy! Jim |
