Winter

Hey everyone,
Thought it might be interesting to hear everyone's strategies for dealing with the "gardening itch" in wintertime when everything is frozen over.
I use this time to:
-trade for new kinds of seeds.
-schedule my "sowing calendar."
-clear debris away from basal crowns of perennials.
-plot out new beds and containers.
-research more about plants I have or will be growing.
-wintersow.
Wintersowing has been an easy, inexpensive, and space-friendly way to increase the variety of plants in my garden and since the containers are outdoors, it doesn't clutter an already-cluttered manhattan apartment like indoor sowing does.
What do you other metro gardeners do?
Happy New Year,
George

RE: Winter

i hate this cold weather. i sit at home and go through the pages on gw. and then i go to school, head to the computer lab (thats where i am now) and do the same thing!! ha!!! =D

oh, that and winter sowing. but i did that in the basement and sat myself down on the floor near the boiler so i was nice and toasty. made sure everything was ready and in their containers before i made a sprint out to the yard to set them all down before i ran back inside to the warth double speed.

RE: Winter , itch, sowing

What do you all sow outside with your winter sowing?
Just flowers?
Or herbs too?
I promised myself I would not get winter garden itch, but it is here. My poor lilac and a few bulbs thought it was spring and did things yesterday!! They will have stopped by the time I check tomorrow morning, no doubt

Hi Audrey,
I sow mostly flowers, but this year I'm going to try some herbs too. I sow them outside in milk jugs and they get a head start on spring and turn out to be very strong plants.
Hope you have good success with it.
Peace
George

How about tomatoes? Are they possible?

RE: Winter

Hi Audrey,
I've had success in wintersowing both tomatoes and basil.
Here are a couple of links to help you with wintersowing
www.wintersown.org
http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/wtrsow/
The first link especially got me started on tomatoes and the site often has a "free samples" seed pack offer.
Have fun,
George

Here's what I've wintersown so far :
White Bleeding Hearts
Hardy Geraniums
Jacobs Ladder
Japanese Primrose
Larch Tree
Hellebores
Sundrops
Daylily
Clematis
Zinnias
(the last six items were part of a winter solstice tradition started by a "wintersowing forum" memeber)
I've got more containers and seeds ready to go

RE: Winter

Well so far, my Hardy Geraniums are sprouted in their wintersow containers. Still putting out more containers of the more tender things as the weather gets less severe.
Indoors: started petunia seedlings, as well as schizanthus, portulaca, madagascar periwinkle and ice daisies. Rooting lots of coleus too.
